Katy Richards

Katy, who trained on Greasepaint's TV, Film and Theatre make-up course in 2008, tells us about her experience and her work in the industry.

She subsequently applied to the highly-competitive BBC Design Trainee Scheme, which offers a 12-month placement on various television productions, and was accepted in September.

Why did you decide to come to Greasepaint?

I trained on a more basic course a few years previously, but I really wanted to succeed as a make-up artist and felt that Greasepaint could give me a better grounding, good industry contacts and work from the agency after the course.

What was your experience of the course?

Extremely professionally run, informative, fun, with extremely patient and enthusiastic teachers.

How did it feel to end the course and be going into a freelance industry?

Exciting, though a bit worrying as it is so tough out there!

What was your first job?

Greasepaint Agency put me on a student film involving a car crash scene - great special effects make-up practice! Then I did a media event for the launch of a new series of Britain's Next Top Model.

What was involved in applying to Vision?

I had to submit a portfolio of pictures of my work and a huge application form with lots of nasty questions! I agonised over which photos to send. After than I had an interview and a practical makeup test. Then I had a 4-week work placement on a BBC 4 drama production. After that there was another interview and a practical test.

What's it like now you're on the trainee scheme?

I am getting great experience and learning so much by working in professional make-up teams.

Anything you'd like to add?

To anyone who really wants to be a make-up artist, just don't give up!
